Michael Trollope and Tara Jones have written a great article (10 min read) on "Mastering mental readiness for an optimal job search".

Together, they have outlined the key stages in an executive's job search journey; the hurdles they may encounter, and how these challenges can be overcome.

Here are as usual my key takeaways so you can save your most precious asset, namely your time:

1. Day one is typically daunting - At this stage, you possess robust self-belief, which is based on both self-esteem and confidence. Your self-esteem represents your value and worthiness as an individual, while your confidence varies depending on the situation. Currently, you have faith in your skillset to excel in the job you're seeking and are eager to support a business with those skills. You are excited about the potential opportunities and motivated by a genuine desire to succeed

2. One month later things will have changed - Most leaders might feel like they have exhausted all the potential networking, and the idea of another networking event or cup of coffee with a search firm partner feels less attractive than it did 30 days ago. Some executives start to get concerned that their search isn't effective and may begin to panic. This can manifest itself in various ways, two of which are:

2.1. Lower self-confidence driven by a ‘fear of failure’

2.2. Learned helplessness

3. So, what can the executive do?

3.1. Maintain a robust self-belief and control the controllables

3.2. Prepare for your interview like a champion

3.3. Master the post-interview stage – navigate the next steps

3.4. Utilise the power of feedback

3.5. Have a plan ready in case two buses come along at once (or more!)

3.6. Embrace your executive job search to secure your future

Whilst the authors do not specifically mention utilising the support of a transition coach, it is often one of the best ways to equip yourself with the most impactful support.
