Spencer Stuart’s “Closing the Confidence Gap” report reveals a startling disconnect between CEOs & their hashtagBoards


Key Insights
1. Only 22% of CEOs feel their boards are providing effective support in today’s fast‑changing environment—compared to 43% of directors who believe they are

2. Only 1/3 of CEOs say they're highly confident in their board’s ability to help them navigate critical challenges 

And that matters deeply—those who do feel supported report:

1. Stronger total shareholder returns
2. Better achievement of growth goals
3. Improved CEO–board alignment and satisfaction 

So, what are CEOs calling for?

1. Thought partnership – 60% want board members to help tackle complex issues - only 41% say they get it

2. Deep expertise – 53% seek subject‑matter expertise; yet only 43% report receiving it - vs. 63% of directors who feel they are delivering

3. More strategic debate – 40%+ want more agenda time for future‑oriented discussions
 
🔍 The turning point?

CEOs who explicitly set expectations with their boards are 68% likely to feel supported—compared to 50% among those who don’t

1. Define support at the start—& revisit it frequently. What style of engagement does the CEO need? Thought‑partnership, personal backing, or expert input?

2. Equip the board with the right voices—digital, cybersecurity, regulatory. It’s not just about filling seats, it’s about fit-for-purpose expertise evolving with your strategy

3. Create space during board meetings for stretching future-focused strategic thinking. Prioritize debate over reporting
