Is building Confidence in your team a top leadership task?
Brain Powered Coaching has recently published the "Unlocking Potential" report that has collected responses over a two-year time period from 17,000 employees 🙌🏼 globally!
Key Insights
The report highlight the critical need for organisations to create environments that deliberately cultivate #PsychologicalSafety, #Resilience, & confidence-building experiences.
Empowering employees with these capabilities drives better decision-making, fuels innovation, & ultimately boosts overall organisational performance
It also identified the vicious cycle of how self-assurance gaps can lead to self-doubt, become a fear of failure, before turning into imposter syndrome
90% of respondents question themselves & 2nd-guess their decisions
89% of respondents worry about making a mistake
84% of respondents are stressed from taking on too much
83% of respondents compare themselves to others & think they may be more intelligent or capable than themselves
77% of respondents don't always speak up in meetings, because they doubt themselves
56% of respondents ALWAYS worry about making mistakes
53% of respondents experience #ImposterSyndrome ("I feel like a fraud")
48% of respondents have had a career break & now struggle with their confidence, with 17% experiencing ongoing challenges. This was especially visible among female employees
19% of respondents regularly experience Imposter Syndrome
In Summary
Confidence matters — it influences everything from client service and speaking up, to sharing ideas, challenging the status quo, career progression, performance, & even the mental space needed for creative, intelligent thinking
Recommended Actions
1. Leaders who foster a resourceful mindset & equip their employees with tools to navigate challenges can greatly strengthen their adaptability & problem-solving abilities.
2. By cultivating psychological safety & promoting a ‘fail-fast’ culture, leaders & organisations can make risk-taking feel safer & more productive
3. Invest in building a culture of confidence though targeted executive coaching. Whilst this survey looks at employees, the leadership level isn't too far off from the above
📣 But don't take my word for it, take it from a recent client of mine, an SVP of HR who was asked to be coached during a critical time when the CHRO had already tanked & the company was going through a major transformation. The client was able to overcome imposter syndrome tendencies & confidently step up to the interim CHRO role until the new CHRO had onboarded.
Our coaching was described by her as follows:
💬 „Navid & I covered a lot of ground during our coaching engagement. As a result, I feel motivated and I‘ve got a much clearer picture in my mind around which areas to tackle and the right interventions to do that. When working together, I had a fair number of lightbulb moments and the coaching has helped me to debunk some unproductive thinking too“
